Laxman Shreshtha

Laxman Shreshtha was born in 1939 in Siraha, Nepal.

In 1962 he received his Diploma in Painting from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai. In 1967 he received the French government scholarship to study at Ecole Nationle Superieure des Beaux Arts; Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and Atelier 17 of Williain Hayter in Paris, France. In 1966 he received Prix d’Honneur at International Art Exchange Exhibition in New York. In 1970 he received the British Council Grant to study at the Central School of Art and Craft, London. In 1971 he received the IVP Grant from the US government for a study tour in Baltimore and San Francisco.

Laxman had several solo exhibitions:
In 1963 he had a solo exhibition at Taj Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1964 and 1969 he had exhibited solo in Kathmandu, Nepal. In 1968, 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1976 he exhibited solo in Mumbai. In 1979 Laxman had a solo exhibition in North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, USA. In 1980 he exhibited solo in Freinsheim, Germany. In 1981, 1988, 1994, 1997, 2003 and 2008 he had solo exhibitions at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1987 he exhibited solo in Nairobi, Kenya.

Laxman participated in several group shows in India and overseas:
In 1968 he took part in First Triennale of World Art, New Delhi. In 1966 he participated in a group show in Salle De La Presse and Maisons des Beaux Art, Paris. In 1971 he took part in a group show in Baltimore and San Francisco, USA. In 1980 he participated in a group show in Cologne. In 1981 and 1987 he participated in a group exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1984 Laxman participated in a group show at Gallery 7, Mumbai. In 1988 he participated in Seventeen Indian Painters at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1991 he took part in ‘State of the Art’ at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1992 he participated in Husain Ki Sarai in New Delhi. In 1992 he participated in Pioneers to the New Generation in Kolkata. In 1993 Laxman exhibited in group shows in Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata and New Delhi. In 1993 he participated in two group shows at National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. In 1993 he participated in Asprey Auction at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2000 he exhibited in group shows at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1999 he participated in The Art of Charity at Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai. In 2000 he took part in a group show at Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Mumbai. In 2001 and 2002 he participated in Ideas and Images Part III and Ideas and Images Part IV at National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai. In 2001 and 2002 he exhibited in Metropolitan Pavilion, New York. In 2013 he exhibited in a group show Nothing is Absolute: A Journey To Abstraction at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai.

Laxman lives and works in Mumbai.
