Rameshwar Broota was born in 1941 in New Delhi.

From 1960 - 1964 he attended College of Art (Delhi Polytechnic), New Delhi.

Broota had several solo exhibitions:
In 1986 he showcased ’Man Series’ in Calcutta Art Gallery, Calcutta. In 1990 he exhibited ‘Faces’ at Genesis Art Gallery, Calcutta. In 1998 he showcased ‘The Windinh Spiral’ at Shridharani Gallery, he exhibited solo at Triveni Kal Sangam in New Delhi and Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi. In 2001 he exhibited solo ‘Edge of Precipice at Shri A. Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi. In 2008 he showcased solo ‘Photographs by Rameshwar Broota’ at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai. In 2011 ‘The End to the Other’ (Photographs) was held at Sridharani Gallery, Triveni Sangam and Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi. In 2012 he showcased ‘Traces of Man’ at XVA Gallery, Dubai. In 2014 he showcased a retrospective, Visions of Interiority: Interrogating the male body, Rameshwar Broota: A Retrospective, works from 1963 - 2013 at Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi.

Broota participated in various group shows:
From 1965 - 1970 he participated in several group shows at Delhi Shilpi Chakra, New Delhi. In 1971 he had a joint show ‘Words & Lines with the artist Khosa, New Delhi. In 1973 - 1974 he participated in touring exhibition of Contemporary Indian Art, Poland, Yugoslavia, Sweden, Bulgaria & Belgium. In 1975 he participated in National Exhibition of Art at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 1976 he participated in Painting Festival at Cagnes-Sur Merc, France.In 1978 he took part in Triennale IV at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 1980 - 1981 and 1984 he participated in International Triennale at Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, England. In 1980 he took part in ‘Contemporary Indian Art in Dubai, UAE. In 1982 he showcased in Contemporary Indian Paintings at Kunsthalle Darmstadt, Germany. He participated in ‘Modern Indian Painting from the NGMA’ at Hirshhorn Museum and sculpture garden in Washington DC, USA. In 1985 he participated in Ten Artists at Gallery 7, Mumbai. In 1984 he took part in Asia Art Biennale and Tokyo Biennale in Japan. In 1986 he participated in Baghdad International Festival for Art, Iraq. In 1987 he participated in Coup de Coeur Festival of India in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1987 he took part in ‘Six Painters’ at Shridharani Gallery at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi. He showcased at Coups de Coeur in Halles de L’ille, Geneva. In 1988 he took part in a group show at Takaoka Municipal Museum of Art & Meguro Museum of Art, Japan. In 1995 he participated in ‘River of Art’, an exhibition of Art Today, New Delhi. In 1996 he took part in Pyeongtaek International Art Festival at Pyeongtaek, South Korea. In 1997 he took part in Major Trends in Contemporary Indian Art after the Independence at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi and he showcased in ‘Tryst with Destiny’ at Singapore Art Museum in Singapore (organised by CIMA). He participated in ’50 Years of Indian Independence at NGMA, New Delhi presented by Vadehra Art Gallery. He was showcased in Masanori Fukoka’s Contemporary Indian Art Collection Exhibition at NGMA in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Calcutta. In 1998 he showcased in a group show at Espace Art Gallery, New Delhi. He participated in Multimedia Art of 90’s at CIMA Art Gallery, Calcutta. In 1999 he showcased in ‘Contemporary Art of India’ at Peabody Essex Museum, USA; he took part in ‘Contemporary Indian Art’ at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi. In 2000 he had two person show with the artist Mona Rai at Gallery 7, Mumbai. He showcased in ‘Distillation’ in Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Mumbai. He took part in ‘Contemporary Indian Painting at Habitat Centre, New Delhi (presented by Art Motif). He participated in Celebration of the Human Image at Habitat Art Gallery, New Delhi (presented by Gallery 42).

In 2003 he showcased in A Celebration of Colors at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai & Defense Colony Gallery, New Delhi (presented by Vadehra Art Gallery in collaboration with The Times of India). In 2006 - 2007 he showcased in ‘Indian Art II/III Inventing/ Inverting Traditions’ at Grosvenor Vadehra Gallery, London. In 2007 he participated in ‘The Eye Within’, at Romain Rolland Gallery, Allaince Francaise, New Delhi (presented by the Shrine Gallery). He took part in ‘Body Mind Soul’ at Visual Art Gallery, Indian Habitat Centre, New Delhi (by Gallery Threshold). In 2008 he participated in ‘Mapping Memories - I’, Painted Travelogues of China & Greece at Gallery Threshold, New Delhi; he participated in ‘Still Moving Image’ at Devi Art Foundation, Gurgaon; he took part in Modern & Contemporary Indian Art at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi. In 2008 he took part in ‘Modern’ at Royal Centre in Amman, Jordan (organised by Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi in collaboration with Embassy of India in Amman, Jordan).  In 2009 he showcased in ‘Master Class’ by The Arts Trust, Mumbai; ‘ZIP Files’ at Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai; Progressive to Altermodern 62 Years of Indian Modern Art at Grosvenor Vadehra Gallery, London. In 2010 he took part in ‘Paper Trail’ at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi; 10 x 10 at Gallery Threshold, New Delhi; ‘Freedom to March: Rediscovering Gandhi through Dandi’ by Ojas Art at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 2010 - 2011 he participated in ‘Figure/Landscape: Part Two’ at Aicon Gallery, London. In 2010 he participated in ‘Art Celebrates 2010 Sports & the City’ at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (presented by Vadehra Art Gallery). In 2011 he participated in Manifestations V at Delhi Art Gallery, New Delhi. In 2011 he participated in ‘Time Unfolded’ at Kiran Nadar Museum, New Delhi; Miniscule Marvel at Gallery BMB, Mumbai (presented by Contemplate). In 2012 he participated in India Art Fair IV, New Delhi (presented by 1x1 Gallery, Dubai). In 2012 he participated in Roti, Kapda Aur Makaan’ at Ojas Art, New Delhi; he showcased in ‘Forms and Formlessness’ at Art Alive Gallery, Gurgaon: and Natural Bodies, Subverted Canons at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi. In 2012 he participated in Indian Art Fair- New Delhi (represented by 1x1 Gallery, Dubai).

He received several awards & honors:
In 1973 & 1975 he received AIFACS Awards, New Delhi. In 1976 he won Hyderabad Art Society Award for Graphics. In 1987 - 1988 he received the Senior Fellowship from the Ministry of Education by Government of India, New Delhi and L. N. Gupta Memorial Award by Max Muller Bhavan, Hyderabad. In 1997 he received Kala Vibushan from AIFACS, New Delhi. In 2013 he received ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ from Lalit Arpan Festival Asavari, New Delhi. In 1987 he conceptualized & directed The Body (1985) and ‘Biography of Life’ (1985) which was screened at Shridharani Gallery, Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi. In 2004 ‘Eashwar Mime Company’ directed & Body Painting by Broota with Vasundhara Tiwari organized by Max Muller Bhavan.
